Hitching Rail 101

I’ve been meaning to put this thing up for 6 months now

Some friends made us this heavy duty hitching rail

I finally got tired of tripping over it

First you lay things out

This is one heavy sumbeech

You know you love a chick who can

run a set of clamshell diggers

I have to do this by hand because of that

pesky power line right there

!!Wah La!!

the hernia only hurts a little bit

And here we have

your token breathtaking Arizona sunset

complete with Christmas lights

I saw her 10 minutes ago

disappearing into her room

with her dog

and a big smile

I probably should have investigated

She comes out and says

“Cover your eyes, Mommy”

Happy Turkey Day

We had ourselves some turkey

and then we rode horses

Jeffery, Mercy, BJ, Wade and Mikey

with Shady (who thinks she’s a horse),

Vinnie, Mesquite, Monte, Olga and Lil Bit

I’m riding this new horse.

She’s never seen a cow in her life.

Guess where we went first?

Mercy and Wade pick one out

while NeeNee discovers

what she was born and bred to do

She’s getting the idea

It comes in 3’s

One more accident

This happened yesterday at the shop

We had a lot of horses down there

We generally tie our personal horses all over the place

rails, trucks, fences, whatever’s handy

Mercy’s horse, Casper

has been everywhere

As a result, he ties anywhere

without being actually tied

I call it “hard tied” or “not hard tied”

So he is “not hard tied”

to the stocks

standing near 3 other horses hard tied

to the hitching rails

Wade and I were talking nearby

when I heard a bizarre noise

I turned to see Casper dragging the stocks

over his head

He backed very quickly into the hitching rail

and another horse

I said “OMG IT’S CASPER!! WADE – RUN!!”

We fell all over each other trying to get to Casper

We got to him and could see he’d caught the noseband

of his halter on the stocks and was stuck fast

Wade yelled for a knife

3 people (including me) stuck a knife in his face

Meanwhile he’s talking to Casper

Saying “Whoa easy buddy, we’re gonna get you outta here”

He grabbed a knife while I held the stocks up

and he cut the halter off

Meanwhile the other 3 horses are all set back

and fighting their ropes

That’s what I call a dangerous situation

We assessed Casper

He looked like this

I flipped out the phone and hit

Speed dial #4

That would be THE VET

who comes after voicemail, Mom and Wade

I have 4 different vets on speed dial

Cause ya never know

We loaded Casper up

and within 45 minutes of it happening

We were standing in the horse room at the vet’s

Some people would have let this go

You know “It’s not that bad”

It was that bad

He looks like this today

There’s a drainage tube and 9 stitches

He’s got one big headache

and is eating plenty of Bute

Big Thanks to Dr. McCollum

We sure appreciate your stitching skills

and you being there for us

Now if we can only get thru

Thanksgiving

without something else happening

Y’all know I’m cooking right?

Horse therapy

Nothing soothes a broken heart

like time in the sun,

kids,

and

good horses

Today Mercy rode Mesquite

To give Casper a break

He gets to work tomorrow

Mesquite loved this

He’s well into his 20’s you know

*Note the old riding crop in her hand

Mesquite needed some forward motivation

She was tapping his butt all the way down the road

I finally had to tell her to stop

Poor horse

He puts up with much nonsense

Brokenhearted and crying

Yesterday

I took 3 dogs to vet for surgery

2 dogs got neutered and

one had a tumor removed

While the vet was neutering my dogs

I was shoeing her horse

Good trade, cept her bill was bigger than mine

I picked them up

Little Dog was still really dopey

The anesthesia hit him hard

On the way home he perked up

We snuggled and had kissy face

I rolled the window down for him

and he was happy

I got to our gate and was distracted by

another one of our dogs who was playing dead

Little Dog hopped out and

sat right in front of my tire

I didn’t see him

He was too dopey to move like he usually does

I ran him over and killed him

I got out, horrified

His eyes were already glazed and no breathing

I ran thru all the options,

Scoop and run back to the vet

Go get the gun and put him down

Or hold him

I held him while his heart stopped

under my hands

and I cried and cried

He was still so warm

Little Dog, I will miss you so much

I’m so very very sorry

Lord, please hold Little Dog for me

Give him a horse and rider to follow

He liked that best

My donkey – scalped!

More Strange Things

That Happen in the Dark

How horrible is this?

What happened?

I have no idea

It looks like someone grabbed him

and ripped out a good hunk of mane.

No other marks on him

We have ideas who did it, but no proof

We (I) refuse to believe our other precious horses

would harm little old Jack

I do feel sorry for him

BUT

I’ve seen him grab other equines that way

although not leaving marks like that, but still brutal

much like a pit bull

He has a little cranky attitude thing

Apparently,

according to my mother

“No one except you and Molly

really love Jack”

This is Molly

She’s neurotically attached to Jack

Behind her, Cadencia

who is neurotically attached to Molly

Not a picture of mental health around here

Oh

and

despite my camera REALLY

having a hard time shooting in the dark

through a screen

Can you make out what’s lurking outside the porch?

Monsters in the dark

Strange things happen in the dark

around here

This was last night’s “monster”

Given the slightest encouragement

Mesquite will waltz right in

He’s actually up on the steps

I would have let him in but

I wasn’t sure he could navigate

down the steps in the dark

He doesn’t see so well anymore

but he can smell a carrot a mile away

Mesquite is in his 20’s.

Around here the old folks get special treatment

After he has his grain and blanket

He’s allowed to roam the property

and occasionally the neighbor’s property too

Together they’re going to put that cow in that pen

with Little Dogs’ help

He stood in a very small backyard pen

for several years

Well….

Cathy’s friend Leah

fell in love

and now Cloud

lives on 20 acres

with 4 other horses

where it’s green and grassy

A creek to play in!!!

He’s so happy

and

They love him!!
